About Counselling
We will go at your pace, with some gentle encouragement, to look at the difficulties you are experiencing. I will offer support to help you make the changes that will help you lead a more contented and fulfilled life.
This can ...
- Allow thoughts and feelings about other experiences you have had
- Help you make sense of them and why they are still having an impact
- Heal old wounds, repair patterns and improve current relationships
- Lead to old, harmful feelings being replaced by new, positive emotions
- Integrate these experiences into your new way of being in a way that is healing and transformative
You may be wondering about the difference between words such as 'counselling' and 'psychotherapy' and which may be more suited to your needs...
Counselling
This works at a more immediate level, focusing on an issue or crisis point in your life, such as; bereavement or another kind of loss; a relationship or job change; communication difficulties; loss of life direction; a decision point, and many other issues that can benefit from a patient and listening ear while you talk and work through your experience and how you are feeling.
Psychotherapy
This works at a deeper process level, considering how the structure of your identity and thinking is affecting your experience of relationships and being in the world. This is most helpful when dealing with issues that are deep-rooted and impact on your relationship to self and others. Psychotherapy is a deeper psychological process which happens beneath the content of what you are talking about. We work through this together within our safe and supported working alliance.
It is ok to start counselling and begin to talk things through without being sure which approach is needed. Sometimes we move between the two.. what is most important is that our time together is helpful, healing and effective. I am here to listen, support and guide you and to offer you the therapeutic relationship and tools that are tailored specifically to your needs. I will support you towards healing, understanding, growth and change, with better self-awareness and satisfaction in all areas of your life.
Our working alliance becomes one which is deep, trusting and wholly and unconditionally accepting. Through relating with someone who is able to hold you in mind, especially when you may struggle to do this yourself, you may establish a calmer and more accepting relationship with yourself. This new, self-accepting, self-esteeming sense of self can, in safe and gentle ways, be taken into other relationships in your life, making them healthier, more authentic and more fulfilling.
